A Ritual For Letting Go

It’s crazy to say, but 2018 is slowly dwindling its way to a close. Towards the end of any chapter, it’s good to take the time to reflect, and assess. What is working for you? And, how have you been working against yourself? This ritual will help to bring to light all that is no longer serving you, and it will guide you to create the opportunity to make a statement to the universe that you’re ready to let go of that excess once and for all.

This ritual is best done during the month of December 2018.

To perform this ritual you will need:

  • Smudging tool of choice (for this ritual I would recommend Sage)

      • Sage is known best for clearing, and carrying away energy that no longer serves you.

  • One candle (preferably white)

      • White is the color of new beginnings.

  • Journal/piece of paper and pen

  • Timer

  • Bowl of water

Step One: Light your smudging tool and begin by smudging your aura (yourself), your surroundings, and your ritual tools. For more information on smudging click here.

While you smudge yourself, recite the following mantra 3 times out loud, or quietly to yourself -

“I am cleansing myself so that I may think the truth. I am cleansing myself so that I may see the truth. I am cleansing myself so that I may hear the truth. I am cleansing myself so that I may speak the truth. I am cleansing myself so that I may feel the truth.”

While you smudge your surroundings and your ritual tools, recite the following mantra 3 times out loud, or quietly to yourself -

“May the spirit of the sage (or your smudging tool of choice) cleanse and clear my surroundings and these tools of any energy that does not serve my highest good.”

Step Two: Light your candle as a symbol of honor for this ritual.

Step Three: Sit comfortably. Soften your gaze on the candle in front of you, or close your eyes. Place your left hand on your heart center, and your right hand on your navel center. Take about 10 deep breaths (or as many breaths as it intuitively feels right to you to become centered here) with as much awareness of each breath as you can presently bring to the table.

Step Four: At the top of your journal page or piece of paper write, “The ways in which I block myself from my highest potential are…”. Then, grab your timer and set it for 20 minutes. Press start on your timer, and for the entire 20 minutes free write on all the ways you hold yourself back. Allow your stream of conscious to flow freely. Even if you can’t “think” of what to write, just keep writing - even if it’s gibberish, or scribbling. The point is to clear out all of the “muck” of the monkey mind, in order to reveal to yourself what’s laying underneath in your subconscious.

Step Five: When the 20 minutes are up, take a few moments to scan through and reflect back on what you wrote. Make a mental note of  any specific themes or patterns amidst your writings.

Step Six: Hold your paper(s) in both hands and repeat the following mantra -

“I am ready to let these habits go. I am ready to release the ways in which I block myself from my highest potential. I no longer intend to work against myself. I release these habits from my system. I free them from my soul’s memory. I am ready to let these habits go. And so it is.”

Step Seven: Then, take the paper(s) to the flame of your candle, and watch it burn. Burn it up, with the intention to seal the release of the ways in which you hold yourself back from the life that’s meant for you. When the flames get too close to your hand, place the paper(s) in the bowl of water and continue to watch until the embers of the fire are out completely. Watch as all that no longer serves you is released.

Step Eight: Stay in your ritual space for as long as feels intuitively right to you, and observe the shesha (the energetic residue) of the ritual you just took part in. When you’re ready to get up, blow out your candle, and dispose of the water and paper as you see fit.

May this ritual support you and your highest good,
